PARLIAMENT APPROVES THE OPERATIONALISATION OF HOIMA, LIRA AND SOROTI CITIES

Parliament has approved the immediate operationalisation of Hoima, Lira and Soroti Cities, bringing the Total number of Cities to 10. The three, which were scheduled to take off in the FY 2021/22 were brought forward for consideration in next years’ general election.The Cities have already established themselves as nerve centres and economic hubs in their respective regions.The Ministry of Local Government proposed the phased elevation of fast-growing and viable urban settlements to better planned and sustainable Cities with corresponding physical and socio- economic infrastructure. It was envisioned that creation of these cities will attract Socio-Economic transformation in their respective regions and, sidestep the sprawling of unplanned urban settlements, with their attendant socio-economic problems.Consequently Parliament approved the  creation of  15 regional and strategic Cities namely; Arua (West Nile); Gulu (Northern Uganda); Kabale (South Western Uganda); Lira (Northern Uganda); Masaka (Central Uganda)  Mbale (Eastern Uganda); Mbarara (Western Uganda); Soroti (Teso Sub-region); Wakiso for Central Uganda; Fort Portal (for tourism); Hoima (for oil); Jinja (industrialisation); Moroto (Mining) and Nakasongola (Industrialisation).
